Go Outdoors

July 7th, 2023

In July, we celebrate Parks and Recreation month. Whether you are enjoying time with your family or taking a lunch break at work, going out in nature to take a walk or a hike can offer numerous benefits for both your physical and mental well-being. There are lots of ways to get out in nature. No matter if you work in the office or remotely, break up your day and re-charge by finding a park or trail near you and
get outdoors!

“We are fortunate here at ZOLL Pawtucket to be situated near a good-sized pond, wooded area, and bike path. Most days at lunch time, I take a walk with colleagues; it’s important to stretch your legs and get out into nature. The wooded area has trails that I sometimes take, but most days I stay on the bike path which has good views of Central Pond and James V Turner Reservoir. I am an amateur mycologist, so I always have my eyes peeled for mushrooms along the path and in the woods. Just last week I found a beautiful Berkeley Polypore growing on an oak stump right next to the path. I also like to take an afternoon fifteen to sit outside on a nearby bench to meditate and listen to bird calls and other sounds of nature. This is a very calming exercise that I would recommend to all!”

“While I haven’t had much time in recent years being able to do it, horseback riding on trails through parks is one of my favorite activities. It brings me back to happy times in my childhood, focuses and centers me to just be in the moment and connect with nature and just enjoy the special bond with the animal.”

“My favorite park is also known as “the heartbeat of New York City,” Washington Square Park. I’m lucky that it’s also the closest park to me. Every day after work, I take my dog on a walk. So long as the weather allows, our favorite past time is to sit on a bench and watch the world go by. I say “our” because my dog loves watching all the colorful characters just as much as I do.”

Boost Productivity, Get Active During Breaks

Taking a break during the workday can boost productivity. But what are some of the advantages of walking, hiking, and getting active during breaks?

Get in shape. Walking and hiking are excellent forms of exercise that can enhance overall fitness and help you:

  • Improve cardiovascular health
  • Strengthen muscles
  • Contribute to weight management

Reduce stress and improve mental well-being. Being in nature promotes:

  • Relaxation
  • Natural mood “boosts”
  • Overall psychological well-being
Exposure to sunlight during outdoor walks can enhance vitamin D production, which is beneficial for mental health. Just be mindful of proper sun protection and the importance of staying hydrated.

Have fun and connect with nature. Walking or hiking with friends, family and coworkers can be fun and foster a sense of belonging. It gives you a chance to:

  • Breathe fresh air
  • Connect with nature and appreciate its beauty
  • Disconnect from technology and immerse yourself in the present moment

Boost your cognitive function. Physical activity has been linked to improved cognitive function and memory. It can also help:

  • Enhance focus
  • Sharpen attention
  • Fuel creativity

Remember, you can always meet with a Health Coach for help creating your personalized health plan. And it’s always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise routine, especially if you have specific health concerns.
