The Details about Diabetes
In November, we shine the spotlight on diabetes in honor of National Diabetes Month. Affecting nearly 130 million U.S. adults1, diabetes is a chronic health condition that impacts how the body breaks down food into energy. Learning how to manage chronic conditions is an important step toward better health.
What is Diabetes?
When the food you eat is broken down into sugar, your pancreas releases insulin. When diabetes is present, the person’s body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use the insulin it makes as well as it should. That means that too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream. This can lead to serious health issues, such as heart disease and kidney failure.
3 Types of Diabetes
- Type 1 is caused by an autoimmune reaction, and the body stops making insulin. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily.
- Type 2 diabetes develops over many years and can be prevented or delayed with healthy lifestyle changes. The body doesn’t use insulin or keep blood sugar levels stable.
- Gestational diabetes
develops in pregnant women and typically ends when the baby is born.
